HALL OF FAME
Therese Cullen Seal, a native of Tarpon Springs, was inducted into the U.S. Swim School Association Hall of Fame on October 26, 2007. Seal who owns and operates three swim schools in the Tampa area, joins some of the most respected leaders in the learn-to-swim industry including Benjamin Franklin and Francis Lieber, the founder of America’s first swim school.

“When I gave my first swim lesson at the age of nine, I hoped it would be something I could do for the rest of my life, but I never expected to be lucky enough to achieve that goal,” said Seal. “I am so humbled to accept this honor from the Association and I thank my family, friends and all my many, many swim students for their support and love of this great sport.”

The U.S. Swim School Association Hall of Fame honors individuals who have at least 20 years experience and have made exceptional contributions to the swim school profession and learn-to-swim industry. Inductees are nominated by U.S. Swim School Association members and selected by the Board of Directors. Inductees range from Benjamin Franklin, the industry’s 18th century pioneer, to Francis Lieber, founder of America’s first swim school in 1827, Australia's most respected Olympic swimmer and Coach Forbes Carlile to Nelson Vargas the President of the Mexican Swimming Federation.

Seal founded Seal Swim School in 1979 and her business has developed into one of the largest learn to swim programs in Florida. She co-authored Swim Safe Little Seals, a child’s introduction to water safety. Seal also launched an educational Water Safety program that is modeled after the book. The program is formatted to teach water safety and awareness to all children through elementary and preschools, daycare centers, local libraries and various child safety coalitions throughout the country.

Seal graduated from the Academy of the Holy Names in Tampa and holds a B.S. in Education from the University of South Florida. She is a member of the United States Swim School Association, an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Trainer, a competitive sailor and has been a certified lifeguard for over 30 years. She resides at her lakefront home in Odessa, Florida. She enjoys spending time with her five children, their spouses and her grandchildren.
